This album is the original soundtrack to artist David A. Hardy's edit of the 1957 Russian film Road to the Stars, directed by Pavel Klushantsev. Hardy has taken Klushantsev’s original docu-film, and created the first ever English subtitled version, including translations of dialogue and the original factual information, as well as new artistic and cinematic references which further emphasise its influence and vision.
Dynamic and thrusting themes show that, from the start, we look forward to the conquest of space in this Soviet dream of the future. Understated Russian motifs add to the mood of nationalism and ideology that gave rise to the drive for supremacy in space which was so prevalent at the time. Yet we also find an element of uncertainty – perhaps even trepidation – as the adventure begins.
Speculation as to what would be found, and what challenges would have to be met, was inevitable, and here we encounter an orchestral interpretation, using aspects of the patterns so familiar from film scores of the time, which grasps that seminal period in the history of space travel.
